How do sensors accurately identify ambient temperature and humidity?
In principle, humidity sensors for measuring ambient humidity fall into two main categories: resistive and capacitive.
Resistive humidity measurement: The key lies in the polymer humidity-sensitive material. As humidity increases, the polymer swells, increasing its internal free volume and the number of charge carriers. Simultaneously, the activation energy of the polymer polyelectrolyte counterions decreases, improving mobility and lowering the material's impedance. Conversely, when humidity decreases, water molecules escape from the ionic polymer, increasing the material's resistance. By measuring this change in impedance, the relative humidity can be monitored.
Capacitive humidity measurement: Humidity-sensitive capacitors are generally made of polymer film capacitors. When the ambient humidity changes, the dielectric constant of the humidity-sensitive capacitor changes, causing the capacitance value to also change. This change exhibits a linear relationship with humidity. MEMS technology further enhances its advantages of small size, low power consumption, and good consistency.
Humidity sensors are often used in conjunction with a thermistor in temperature and humidity sensor modules to simultaneously measure both temperature and humidity.
