MQ-E3-H2 is the sensor of fixed potential electrolysis type. By redox reaction, H₂and O₂release charge and form the current. The value of current is proportional to the concentration of H₂. By testing the value of current, the concentration of H₂ is known.

Cross-interference characteristics
MQ-E3-H2 sensor also responds to other gases besides the target gas. The response characteristics of the sensor to several common interfering gases are listed in the table below for reference. The data in the table are typical responses of interfering gases at given concentrations.
