The MQ-E3-HCN hydrogen cyanide sensor is a constant-potential electrolytic sensor. Hydrogen cyanide and oxygen undergo corresponding redox reactions at the working and counter electrodes, releasing charge and generating an electric current. The magnitude of the generated current is proportional to the concentration of hydrogen cyanide. The concentration of hydrogen cyanide can be determined by measuring the current.
